A global SME maturity and evidence framework.
MGS tracks where an SME is, what is verified, what is missing, what is risky, and what support will move it forward. It is the common language that lets programmes, funders, and SMEs read the same record.
One of six engines in the Mothusi platform. All connected to the same growth record.
Why it exists, and how it operates.
Every SME on the platform has a position in MGS: a stage (Forming, Operating, Established, Scaling, Institutional), a set of levers measured against that stage, an evidence confidence level per signal, a risk profile, and issue clusters that describe what is blocking progress.
Mothusi can infer that a business looks Established. MGS does not confirm that until evidence exists. The framework separates observed maturity from verified maturity, so existing businesses can complete a targeted backfill pack to prove earlier foundations without being forced through irrelevant beginner steps.
For institutions, MGS is the citable layer. The methodology is published. The evidence schema is open. Cohorts are comparable across countries, sectors, and programmes.
What MGS Framework does.
- 01
Five stages of maturity
Forming, Operating, Established, Scaling, Institutional. Defined by evidence, not by self-assessment.
- 02
Lever set per stage
The specific levers each business should be moving at its current stage. Different at Forming than at Scaling.
- 03
Five rungs of evidence confidence
Self-reported, AI checked, document verified, live data verified, third-party verified. Each signal carries its grade.
- 04
Risk signals
Compliance freshness, cash buffer, commercial concentration, and other forward-looking risk indicators per business.
- 05
Issue clusters
Bankability Gap, Market Proof Gap, Compliance Freshness Gap, Team and Governance Gap. Cluster-level diagnostics for cohort-level intervention.
- 06
Observed vs verified tier
A business can appear Established by behaviour, but MGS only confirms the stage when evidence supports it. Backfill packs close that gap without forced regression.
Different audiences. Same engine output.
| Audience | Value delivered |
|---|---|
| Programme operators | Cohort diagnostics that move beyond attendance. Cluster-level intervention design. |
| Funders and DFIs | Common evidence language across SMEs, sectors, and countries. Risk visibility before disbursement. |
| Researchers and governments | A published methodology that can be cited, compared, and validated. |
| SMEs and farmers | A transparent picture of where they stand and what specifically will move them forward. |
Deploy this engine in your programme.
Whether your programme needs AI guidance, evidence-grade scoring, capital readiness, structured programmes, lever-mapped learning, or a relationship engine, this engine plugs into the same growth record as every other Mothusi capability.
From business support to measurable enterprise development. Across sectors, countries, and real operating environments.
